Homemade Playdough
Home made playdough is one of those simple, reliable activities that children come back to again and again. It is soft, squishy, calming, and endlessly open-ended, making it perfect for sensory play, imaginative play, and creative exploring.
You can keep it plain or add colours, scents, herbs, flowers, natural loose parts, or little play tools depending on the theme.
It is also lovely for mixed-age groups because children can use it in so many different ways, from squeezing and rolling to building tiny worlds, making pretend food, or creating little sculptures.
You'll Need
• 2 cups plain flour
• 1 cup salt
• 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
• 2 tablespoons oil
• 1.5 cups boiling water
• Food dye or natural colouring
• Optional scent such as essential oil, herbs, or spices
• Mixing bowl
• Spoon
How To
Add the flour, salt, and cream of tartar to a mixing bowl.
Add the oil and colouring.
Slowly pour in the boiling water and mix carefully.
Once cool enough to touch, knead the dough until it becomes smooth and soft.
If the dough feels too sticky, add a little extra flour.
If it feels too dry, add a tiny splash of water or oil.
Set out the playdough with loose parts, cutters, rollers, natural materials, or simple tools.
Store in an airtight container after play.
What It Encourages
This activity supports:
• Sensory exploration
• Fine motor development
• Hand strength
• Creativity and imagination
• Emotional regulation
• Language development
• Open-ended play
Playdough is a beautiful tool for slowing down, settling busy bodies, and giving children space to create in their own way.
A Last Note
Always supervise children when making playdough, especially when using boiling water.
Essential oils and scents should be used lightly and with care, especially with younger children or children with sensitivities. Plain playdough is just as wonderful and often the most versatile.
