My Rays of Sunshine
"My Rays of Sunshine" is a simple craft that encourages children to reflect on the people, pets, qualities, and experiences that bring joy to their lives.
Using a paper plate as the sun and pegs as the rays, children create a bright visual reminder of the things they love most. It can be a wonderful conversation starter and a gentle way to encourage gratitude, self-esteem, and emotional awareness.
Every sun ends up completely unique because every child's sunshine looks a little different.
You'll Need
• Paper plate
• Yellow, orange, red, or gold paint
• Paintbrushes
• Wooden pegs
• Permanent marker or pen
• Optional decorations such as glitter, stickers, or collage materials
How To
Paint the paper plate using sunshine colours and allow it to dry.
Once dry, invite children to think about the people, animals, places, activities, and qualities that make them happy.
Write one thing on each peg. Children might choose family members, friends, pets, favourite hobbies, favourite places, special memories, or things they like about themselves.
Clip the pegs around the edge of the paper plate to create the sun's rays.
Take time to talk about each ray and why it is important to them.
Display the finished sunshine somewhere children can revisit whenever they need a reminder of the good things in their lives.
What It Encourages
This activity supports:
• Gratitude
• Positive self-esteem
• Emotional awareness
• Reflection and mindfulness
• Fine motor development
• Communication skills
• Confidence in sharing thoughts and feelings
It creates an opportunity to focus on the things that bring light, connection, and happiness into our lives.
A Last Note
Some children may find it easy to think of lots of rays, while others may need a little support and prompting.
Every answer is meaningful. A beloved pet, a favourite tree, a sibling, a special toy, or something they love about themselves all deserve a place in their sunshine.
