Lavender Cloud Dough

Share to:

Lavender cloud dough is a soft, calming sensory activity that fits beautifully with a “Caring for Me” theme. It uses simple ingredients to create a dough that feels silky, mouldable, and soothing in little hands.

We added purple powder food dye and lavender essential oil to give it a gentle colour and scent, turning it into a lovely sensory experience for slowing down, breathing deeply, and noticing how our bodies feel.

It’s a beautiful activity for calm play, quiet hands, emotional regulation, and sensory exploration.

You'll Need

• Cornflour
• Hair conditioner
• Purple powder food dye
• Lavender essential oil
• Mixing bowl
• Spoon
• Tray or play surface
• Optional: lavender flowers, scoops, cutters, bowls, or loose parts

How To

Add cornflour to a mixing bowl.

Slowly add conditioner and mix until the dough starts to come together.

Add a small amount of purple powder food dye and mix through.

Add 1–2 drops of lavender essential oil, then knead the dough gently.

Adjust the texture as needed. Add more cornflour if it feels too sticky, or a little more conditioner if it feels too dry.

Place the dough on a tray or play surface and invite children to squeeze, roll, press, crumble, mould, and explore.

You can add scoops, cutters, bowls, natural loose parts, or dried lavender flowers for extra sensory play.

What It Encourages

This activity supports:

• Sensory exploration
• Fine motor development
• Emotional regulation
• Calm body awareness
• Mindful breathing
• Creativity and open-ended play
• Language around feelings and senses

It gently invites children to slow down, use their hands, and connect with what feels soothing for them.

A Last Note

Cloud dough can be a little messy, so a tray or outdoor play surface works beautifully.

Lavender essential oil should be used sparingly and with care. Always consider children’s ages, sensitivities, allergies, and supervision needs. This dough is for sensory play only and should stay out of mouths.
