Autumn Spray Pictures

Share to:

Autumn Spray Pictures are one of those wonderfully simple activities that create beautiful results while still feeling like play. Using spray bottles filled with watered-down paint, children can explore colour, movement, and creativity on a large scale.

I usually stick to two or three themed colours, and for this activity we used autumn-inspired shades such as red, orange, yellow, and brown.

This was especially popular with younger children. There’s something incredibly satisfying about using spray bottles, watching colours blend together, and creating artwork through movement and experimentation.

You'll Need

• Thick paper or card
• Spray bottles
• Watered-down paint
• A protected outdoor space
• Old clothes or art smocks

How To

Lay sheets of thick paper or card on the ground.

Fill spray bottles with watered-down paint.

Choose two or three colours that fit your theme. For autumn, colours such as red, orange, yellow, and brown work beautifully.

Invite children to spray the paint across the paper.

Experiment with layering colours, overlapping sprays, and creating different patterns.

Allow the artwork to dry completely before displaying.

What It Encourages

This activity supports:

• Creativity and self-expression
• Fine motor development
• Hand strength
• Colour exploration
• Cause and effect learning
• Sensory play
• Confidence in creating

Spray painting encourages children to experiment freely and focus on the process rather than creating a perfect result.

A Last Note

This activity can get wonderfully messy, making it ideal for outdoor spaces.

Younger children often especially enjoy the independence of using spray bottles and seeing the immediate results of their actions. Every picture turns out differently, which is part of the fun.
