Mini Terrariums

Share to:

Mini terrariums are a beautiful way to bring a little piece of nature indoors. Using simple layers of natural materials, children can create their own miniature ecosystem inside a jar while learning about plants, drainage, and caring for living things.

We used small jars and planted succulents inside, creating tiny gardens that children could take home and continue caring for.

This activity combines creativity, nature connection, and responsibility, while giving children something special to enjoy long after the activity is finished.

You'll Need

• Glass jars or containers
• Small pebbles or gravel
• Activated charcoal (optional but helpful)
• Potting mix or succulent soil
• Small succulents
• Optional decorations such as stones, bark, sticks, shells, or small figurines
• Spoon for adding layers

How To

Begin by adding a layer of pebbles or gravel to the bottom of the jar. This helps with drainage.

Add a thin layer of activated charcoal if using. This can help keep the terrarium fresh.

Carefully add a layer of potting mix or succulent soil.

Create a small hole in the soil and gently place your succulent inside.

Add extra soil around the roots and press lightly to secure the plant.

Decorate with stones, bark, shells, or other natural treasures.

Place the terrarium somewhere with appropriate light for the plants you've chosen.

Water sparingly, especially if using succulents.

What It Encourages

This activity supports:

• Nature connection
• Responsibility and plant care
• Fine motor development
• Observation skills
• Creativity and design
• Patience
• Understanding of living systems

Terrariums give children an opportunity to care for something living while creating a beautiful keepsake.

A Last Note

Different plants have different needs, so take a little time to learn about the species you choose.

Succulents are often a great option for children because they are hardy and require very little water. Watching a plant grow and thrive can be a wonderful reminder that small acts of care can make a big difference.
