Nature Mandala
Nature mandalas are a beautiful way to slow down, connect with the natural world, and create something together. Using leaves, sticks, flowers, stones, seed pods, feathers, and other natural treasures, children can create patterns, shapes, and designs inspired by the world around them.
We created a large group mandala, with everyone contributing pieces to the design. It became a collaborative artwork that encouraged teamwork, creativity, and mindfulness.
One of the lovely things about nature mandalas is that they remind us that nature already provides so much beauty. Sometimes all we need to do is pause and notice it.
You'll Need
• Leaves
• Sticks
• Flowers
• Stones
• Seed pods
• Feathers
• Any other natural treasures you find
• A flat outdoor space
How To
Begin by collecting natural items from your surroundings.
Talk about being mindful when collecting. Choose fallen items where possible and leave living plants, habitats, and wildlife undisturbed.
Create a centre point for your mandala.
Slowly build outward, arranging items into patterns, circles, shapes, or repeating designs.
Work individually or collaborate as a group.
Take time to notice colours, textures, shapes, and the unique details of each piece.
Once complete, spend a moment admiring the finished creation before returning the materials to nature if appropriate.
What It Encourages
This activity supports:
• Nature connection
• Mindfulness
• Creativity
• Observation skills
• Teamwork and collaboration
• Pattern recognition
• Respect for the environment
Creating a mandala encourages children to slow down, notice details, and appreciate the beauty that already exists around them.
A Last Note
Nature mandalas are a wonderful opportunity to talk about caring for the environment and being thoughtful about what we collect.
Encourage children to take only what is needed, favour fallen materials where possible, and leave natural spaces as they found them. The process of creating together is just as important as the finished mandala itself.
